Umm e Kulsoom was not only Egypt’s but also the entire Arab world’s renowned and beloved singer. She immortalized the poetic Arabic translation of Shikwa and Jawab-e-Shikwa, which had been rendered by the blind poet Sawi Ali Al-Sha'laan under the title Hadeeth al-Rooh, by singing it. Through Umm Kulsoom’s voice, the Arab public was introduced to Iqbal for the first time. Due to the immense popularity of Hadeeth al-Rooh, the Government of Pakistan announced on 18 November 1967 that she would be awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, and on 2 April 1968, in a special ceremony held in Egypt, Pakistan’s Ambassador Sajad Haider presented her with the Sitara-e-Imtiaz.

A BBC report revealed that in the 1990s, the American political scientist Dianne Singerman was conducting research in Cairo on the topic of family politics. During her study, she discovered that the common problem for many people was saving money for a wedding: the cost of dowry and bridal gifts, funds for a separate home, all the household furnishings, as well as the expenses of the wedding day itself. These costs, she found, were as much as two-and-a-half times higher than the average annual expenses of an ordinary Egyptian family. Read the full report:
