Abstract

Seven Types of Ambiguity is a method of close reading of literary text. In other words, it shows the effects of poetry and enhances the reader's curiosity and understanding of a piece of poetry by segregating the linguistic properties of the text. William Empson explored that words or references in poetry are mostly ambiguous and, if showcased coherently, convey multiple meanings that may enrich the reader’s admiration of the work. In this article, Urdu poetry has been compared with English poetry to understand the criteria of ambiguity. In the Urdu world, every poem and verse are misconceived as ambiguous, which is difficult to understand. Urdu critics consider ambiguous poems to be meaningless. This work seeks to analyze Urdu poetry in light of William Empsons views.
